Chemical Resistant Screeds

HEAVY-DUTY, HARD-WEARING AND HYGIENIC FLOOR FINISHES

Resin screeds are ideal in harsh industrial environments that are subject to heavy or constant use. These hard-wearing systems offer good resistance to chemical attacks and thermal shocks. As they can be cleaned at high temperatures, they offer a hygienic solution in food and beverage preparation plants and pharmaceutical facilities. As the surface is seamless, it does not allow bacteria to harbour, making it suitable for sterile areas. Coving can also be installed, if required

INSTALLATION

The surface is prepared by diamond grinding or scabbling. The surface is then vacuumed to remove all dust before being primed using the correct substrate primer. The resins, fillers and aggregates are then slowly blended and trowel applied to a depth of between 6mm and 12mm, depending on the agreed specification

What is a polyurethane screed?

A Polyurethane (PU) resin screed is typically applied at thicknesses between 2mm – 4mm for self-smoothing, and 6mm – 9mm for trowel applied systems. Providing a durable floor surface with excellent properties for mechanical and chemical resistance, it is suited to the most demanding of work environments

What is thermal shock?

Thermal shock occurs when the ambient temperature changes significantly and almost immediately, which can lead to floor failure if the material has not been specified correctly. Thermal shock can occur for several reasons, such as steam cleaning, the opening of hot ovens or of doors to cold storage rooms

What is chemical attack?

This is typically described as the breaking down of the floor’s polymer structure such that it is no longer able to fulfil its function. This is particularly common in food processing facilities where there is exposure to hot oils, sugars, acids and fats coming into contact with a floor that does not have the necessary chemical resistance properties

Why do I need a chemical resistant screed in my food and beverage facility?

The floor of a food processing facility is subject to a wide variety of food by-products such as fats, oils, blood, sugar solutions and natural food acids. These substances can cause untold damage to an uncoated substrate, bringing the hygienic and structural integrity of the facility into question
