Where safety is paramount, we install impact-absorbing surfaces using recycled tyres
We offer two systems; Rubber Crumb and Rubber Mulch
Rubber crumb is a porous system that can be installed on flat, mounded or ramped surfaces and various sub-bases, including tarmac, MOT Type 1 and concrete. It is also known as wetpour, playground surfacing and EPDM. The surface course is manufactured from recycled rubber crumb, which is bonded using a urethane resin. The depth of the installation depends on the ‘critical fall height’ of any play equipment above it. It is available in a variety of vibrant colours and can be used to create bespoke designs
Rubber mulch was developed for use in playgrounds and landscape projects to replace traditional bark. The rubber is manufactured from recycled, shredded and graded tyres and, like rubber crumb, is then mixed with a resin binder. It is then rolled and compacted to create a bark-like appearance
An attractive range of lightfast colours from the RAL spectrum provides a high visual impact. Endless designs can be produced for demarcation purposes or to incorporate logos, text and images
These rubber products protect against slips, trips and falls due to their high impact absorbency
Rubber crumb and mulch are easy to clean and long-lasting
These products are made from 100% recycled rubber tyres
All necessary preparation work is carried out at the sub-base, as required. Typically, the black SBR rubber base is installed to the correct thickness, determined by the fall height of any surface equipment. The rubber is combined with a moisture-curing resin in a forced action mixer, then hand trowelled and compacted by a roller. Finally, the EPDM coloured rubber topping (wearing course) is laid in the same manner as the base
Coatech is a member of RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. A leading UK charity which as part of their remit provide information and advice on playground management and advocate for the safety of indoor and outdoor play areas
RoSPA offer a wide range of services for the play industry, such as carrying out annual inspections, risk assessments, approving play area design and promoting codes of practice for safe play spaces
What is the Daily Mile?
Rather than focusing on solely fitness it looks to promote children’s social, emotional and mental well-being. It’s not supposed to be competitive, the main aim is to help children enjoy physical acitivity and become more fit, rather than seeing exercise as ‘winning the race’
This is something children should see as a fun activity, not something they shy away from or dread, as this may be the case with children who lack confidence when it comes to exercise/sports
The Daily Mile will help towards reducing the threat of obesity and have positive impact on children’s well being and overall mental health

Wet Pour Rubber Crumb can be laid on existing solid surfaces such as Tarmac or Concrete. A firm edge should be installed around the perimeter of the area either using rubber kerbs, treated timber or other permanent edging such as pre-cast concrete. The edging allows the surface to expand and contract with temperature fluctuations, so as not to create a trip hazard
Where does the rubber come from? Is it safe?
Rubber crumb is an environmentally friendly product made from recycled tyres. Our suppliers source the rubber we use from the UK and western Europe only, ensuring it is non-toxic and compliant with stringent UK/EU safety standards
The rubber crumb used in these systems is not the same as Rubber Crumb Infill used in synthetic turf for artificial/3G sports pitches which has been the subject of recent safety concerns. Such products are widely sourced from the US where the regulations are less stringent
What depth is rubber crumb installed at?
The top EPDM rubber crumb layer (wearing course) is laid to a minimum of 15mm. If play equipment is going to be installed on the surface then the Critical Fall Height (CFH) from this equipment will be calculated. The depth of the base course required underneath will be determined by the Critical Fall Height. The higher the CFH, the deeper the base course required to absorb the impact from any potential falls
